How it smells
Pink pepper and violet leaf open it, but they are gone quickly and what you are left with is the reason people buy this: a warm toffee-and-chestnut sweetness with cinnamon threaded through it. It smells like something you would want to eat, and it is unapologetic about that.
Tonka bean, vanilla and a soft suede in the base keep it from being pure dessert. There is a dry, slightly leathery edge underneath that gives it somewhere to go after the first hour. It is a well-judged gourmand rather than a sugar bomb, which is what separates it from the imitations it has spawned.
